The current flooding and drought cause problems both in urban as well as in rural areas. Often the problem lies in the discharge of rainwater which reaches the sewerage system via the rainwater drains. In case of excessive rainfall the sewers overflow with all its consequences. In times of drought it is the objective of many municipalities to infiltrate as much precious rainwater as possible into the soil and to avoid unnecessary discharge to the water treatment plant. For new housing estates the disconnection of rainwater is already mandatory. As is also the case for the Monnikenberg project in Hilversum. Disconnecting rainwater drains In April 2019 the contracting firm ZVS from Eemnes started the installation and connecting of Hydrorock infiltration blocks at the Monnikenberg estate in Hilversum. Forest and heath are characteristic of the beautifully designed houses which are being built in full balance with nature. This new development residential area shall not be connected to the sewerage system, as a result of which all rainwater will enter the soil directly; precisely where it belongs!
